Why We Had to Build Tribute

For much of my life, I’ve paid close attention to what I eat. Being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease only deepened that awareness and changed how closely I read ingredient labels.

When I looked at the cereal aisle, I saw products optimized for shelf life, margins, and marketing claims instead of real ingredients and thoughtful nutrition.

Tribute started as a response to that. I wanted to build a cereal with real ingredients, meaningful protein, and no shortcuts hiding behind the label.

We believed cereal could finally be done right.

FAQ

Here are the questions people ask us most as they discover Tribute

What makes Tribute different from other cereals?

Most cereals force a compromise somewhere, whether that's ingredients, protein, or flavor. Tribute was built to close that gap with real ingredients, meaningful protein, and familiar cereal flavor, all without relying on shortcuts like seed oils or "natural flavors."

Why doesn’t Tribute use “natural flavors”?

While the term “natural flavors” sounds simple, it often does not mean what people expect. “Natural flavors" can be complex blends of many compounds and may include processing aids or carrier ingredients that are not individually disclosed on the label.

Because only the broad term appears on the label, consumers have nearly no visibility into what actually creates the flavor.

That is how products can list “natural flavors” and still taste like something very specific, such as “frosted donut,” without containing real versions of those ingredients. We choose not to use “natural flavors” so the taste of Tribute comes from recognizable ingredients, like honey and vanilla extract, that are clearly listed on the label.

Why does Tribute use dairy protein?

When selecting a protein source, we focus on two things: nutritional quality and how it performs in the finished product.

From a nutrition standpoint, we prioritize proteins that provide all essential amino acids and deliver a strong amino acid profile. From a product standpoint, we look for proteins that contribute to a better taste and texture experience.

Many plant proteins can play an important role in the diet, and we're always evaluating new ingredients. For Tribute, we chose dairy protein because it helps us achieve both goals: meaningful protein nutrition and a better bowl of cereal.

Why does tribute cost more than traditional cereal?

Most cereals are built around inexpensive grains, oils, and sweeteners.

Tribute is built around high-quality protein and a stricter ingredient standard. We use ingredients like organic dairy protein, organic gluten-free flours, organic coconut oil, and real sweeteners like honey and coconut sugar while avoiding many of the lower-cost shortcuts commonly found in packaged foods.

Those choices make the product more expensive to produce, but they're also what allow us to deliver meaningful protein, a simpler ingredient list, and a better overall bowl of cereal.

How was Tribute formulated?

Tribute was developed in collaboration with a registered dietitian to ensure every ingredient served a real purpose. We evaluated protein source, sweetness level, fat choice, and overall balance to create a cereal that feels familiar while avoiding unnecessary additives and vague ingredients. The goal was not to chase claims, but to build a formula that simply makes sense.

Is Tribute gluten-free?

Tribute uses ingredients that do not contain gluten, and we test our finished product to ensure gluten levels are extremely low.

In our most recent testing, gluten was below detectable limits (<2.5 ppm), which is well below the FDA threshold for gluten-free foods.

That said, Tribute is not currently certified gluten-free. Individuals with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivities should use their own discretion.

What is allulose, and why does Tribute use it?

Allulose is a naturally occurring sweetener found in foods like figs and raisins that tastes very similar to sugar but is less sweet. It has been studied for how it is metabolized differently than sugar, which is part of why we find it interesting as an ingredient. For Tribute, our focus is simple: allulose supports balanced sweetness that lets the rest of the ingredients shine without overpowering flavor or relying on high sugar levels.

Who is Tribute made for?

Tribute is for people who still want cereal in their routine, but no longer want to compromise on ingredients, protein, or taste. If you've been looking for a cereal built with higher standards, Tribute was made for you.
